“Explorer Commander” usually refers to John White, the governor and explorer who famously led England’s second attempt to establish a permanent settlement in North America. That settlement became famously known as The Lost Colony of Roanoke. 🗺️ The Voyage to Roanoke (1587)
In 1587, backed by Sir Walter Raleigh, John White led a fleet carrying 117 men, women, and children to the New World. Their original destination was actually the Chesapeake Bay area. However, the ship’s captain, Simon Fernandes, refused to take them any further north and forced them to disembark at Roanoke Island (off the coast of modern-day North Carolina).
Among the colonists was White’s pregnant daughter, Eleanor Dare. Shortly after arriving, she gave birth to Virginia Dare, the very first English child born in the Americas. ⛵ The Commander’s Departure
The colony faced immediate trouble. Relations with the local Native American tribes were severely damaged due to a prior military expedition, and supplies were dangerously low. Just a month after his granddaughter’s birth, the colonists begged Commander White to return to England to fetch necessities.
White reluctantly agreed, intending to return quickly. However, upon his arrival in England, the Anglo-Spanish War broke out. Queen Elizabeth I impounded all English shipping to fight the Spanish Armada, stranding White in England for three long years. 🪵 The Return and Discovery (1590)
When White finally managed to sail back and landed on Roanoke Island in August 1590, he found the settlement completely deserted.
No signs of struggle: The houses had been carefully dismantled, and there were no bodies or signs of a battle.
The Cryptic Clues: The only traces left behind were the letters “CRO” carved into a tree and the word “CROATOAN” carved into a wooden post.
White knew this meant the colonists likely relocated to nearby Croatoan Island (now Hatteras Island), home to the friendly Croatan tribe led by Chief Manteo. Unfortunately, a massive hurricane battered White’s ships and forced him to abandon the search and return to England. He never found the funding to return, dying years later without ever knowing the fate of his family. 🔍 Main Theories on Their Fate The Lost Colony — An Outer Banks Mystery
